It was when sugar makers were trying out glass bottles for syrup, potato farmers were using 15lb bags for selling potatoes, and poultry farmers were trying cartons for storing and selling eggs when local producers decided to form the Vermont Farm Products Contest. The year was 1932 and there were about 50 entries. The contest continued year after year and eventually became what we know today as the Vermont Farm Show. This local event has grown to see over 10,000 visitors a day so we encourage you to plan a trip our way!
This year the Vermont Farm Show will be taking place January 31, February 1-2, 2017. They moved to the Champlain Valley Exposition grounds in Essex Junction in 2012, which allowed show organizers to expand into the spacious venue, allowing over 150 exhibitors to participate. There has been great growth in Vermont’s agriculture and local-made products and this event gives producers a fantastic platform to share their products to consumers from within Vermont and beyond. There is so much to see at this show, we simply can’t fit it all in this blog article!
A favorite of many is “Consumer Night” where over 50 farmers and producers are on hand with their amazing products for tasting and buying. Meat, fruits, vegetables, maple syrup, local cheese, honey, oils, spirits, beer, wine, handmade crafts and more all available in one place! You can take part in this from 4pm-7pm on February 1, 2017. Another favorite event is the Capital Cook-off, which pits three teams against each other in an “Iron Chef”-style challenge where they must create a dish from a bag of Vermont-based ingredients. It is really exciting to watch what they prepare for the judges.
