Mt. Independence Historic Site A Great Summer Stop

Summer is in full swing and we sure hope to see many returning guests and new friends this season! If you don’t know much about Vermont or the area in and around Middlebury, where our inn is located, this blog is a great place to stay connected to activities and events you can enjoy during your time here. In addition to events and outdoors activities, there are a lot of really neat historical places to check out and for those of you who have a love for history, we encourage you to visit Mount Independence the next time you are in town.

Mount Independence is a National Historic Landmark in Orwell, VT, about 30 minutes away from our inn. It is a nice scenic drive there as well so worth the trip! This interesting historic site, according to their website, is “one of the largest and most well preserved Revolutionary War archeological sites in America.” Dating back to 1961, the State of Vermont really put concerted efforts into protecting and preserving sites to be both places of education and public interest. There was a lot of naval activity during the Revolutionary War and nearby Lake Champlain had significant importance during that time so designers built the building with the shape of a boat in mind.

The impressive exhibits here, full of amazing artifacts large and small, truly tell a story. You will feel drawn in as you learn about the lives of the soldiers who battled and the details about this significant time in history. In addition to the main exhibit center, there is a network of trails, over 6 miles throughout the 300 acres on the property to explore. See stunning views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding countryside as well as the remains of blockhouses, batteries, soldier’s huts, barracks, and the old general hospital.

It is a great place for the whole family! Don’t let the beautiful summer season pass you by without visiting our beautiful area—there’s so much to see and do or if you are just looking for the perfect place to escape and unwind, our charming and peaceful inn, complete with the best gourmet breakfast you’ll ever have, is the perfect place to call home. var gaJsHost = ((“https:” == document.location.protocol) ? “https://ssl.” : “http://www.”);document.write(unescape(“%3Cscript src='” + gaJsHost + “’ type=’text/javascript’%3E%3C/script%3E”));try {var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker(“UA-8780536-1”);pageTracker._trackPageview();} catch(err) {}
