Fall Foliage Driving Tours Around Middlebury, VT

What is your favorite thing about the fall season? Perhaps you are one who waits for your favorite fall drink on the Starbucks menu, anticipates picking apples and pumpkin, loves to make homemade apple cider, or just enjoys the beauty of the colors that make even a trip to the motor vehicle department enjoyable. We are so fortunate to live in the beautiful state of Vermont – an area rich in history and culture but with an unmatched beauty that comes alive in the fall. Did you know that Middlebury is named one of the #5 towns in New England for fall foliage by Yankee Magazine? This is just proof that you need to make your way over for a fall foliage driving tour!

Swift House Inn is located right in Middlebury, VT and there are several great driving tours that begin and end here if you are visiting us and are in the mood for a little road trip. On the Northwestern Addison County Tour plan for a 1-2 hour trip. You will cross Otter Creek and head toward the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. Continue to the quaint but thriving village of Vergennes and then you will travel south through some beautiful farm country. After eight miles through the Lemon Fair River Valley you will make your way back to Middlebury.

Another great route takes you from Middlebury South to Rt 125 from East Middlebury to Hancock. Proceed north on Rt 100 through Warren and into Waitsfield. Then in Waitsfield take Rt 17 up the windy road past Mad River Glen, which is one of the steepest ski areas around. Make your way back down to Bristol and then Rt 7 to go home to Middlebury.

While closed for the season this year, if you are up for some time on the water, check out the Carillon Cruises next year! They take off from the dock in Shoreham. This 1.5-hour trip takes you past Fort Ticonderoga, Mount Defiance, Mount Independence, and Hand’s Cove. You may also see some Bald Eagles and Osprey along the way.

Swift House owners Dan and Michele Brown will be able to provide detailed directions for your journeys and suggest the best places to stop if you want to do some shopping or a great place to eat.
