Swift House Inn is located right in Middlebury, VT and there are several great driving tours that begin and end here if you are visiting us and are in the mood for a little road trip. On the Northwestern Addison County Tour plan for a 1-2 hour trip. You will cross Otter Creek and head toward the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. Continue to the quaint but thriving village of Vergennes and then you will travel south through some beautiful farm country. After eight miles through the Lemon Fair River Valley you will make your way back to Middlebury.
Another great route takes you from Middlebury South to Rt 125 from East Middlebury to Hancock. Proceed north on Rt 100 through Warren and into Waitsfield. Then in Waitsfield take Rt 17 up the windy road past Mad River Glen, which is one of the steepest ski areas around. Make your way back down to Bristol and then Rt 7 to go home to Middlebury.
While closed for the season this year, if you are up for some time on the water, check out the Carillon Cruises next year! They take off from the dock in Shoreham. This 1.5-hour trip takes you past Fort Ticonderoga, Mount Defiance, Mount Independence, and Hand’s Cove. You may also see some Bald Eagles and Osprey along the way.
Swift House owners Dan and Michele Brown will be able to provide detailed directions for your journeys and suggest the best places to stop if you want to do some shopping or a great place to eat. Don’t let the fall season pass you by without taking the time to stop and smell the roses…or see the beautiful colors!
