Life's most memorable moments are spent with loved ones in exceptional places, and the Swift House Inn, our bed & breakfast in Middlebury, Vermont, is just such a place.
Located in historic Middlebury, Vermont, this 20-room former governor's mansion is Middlebury's only classic Vermont country inn and offers the essence of New England warmth.

Inside, candlelit dinners await you. Large, comfortable rooms offer modern amenities in period decor. Relax, sip a glass of wine by the fire, or ponder your favorite book in the library while the kids explore the garden or sled on a nearby hill. Enjoy complimentary 24-hour coffee service, cookies, and Middlebury's only accommodation where a full breakfast is included! Every window frames a picture of country tranquility; yet shops, museums, and Middlebury College are a short walk away.

Things to DO and SEE

Middlebury's central Vermont location makes it an easy drive to major attractions: the Shelburne Museum, New York's Fort Ticonderoga, Lake Champlain, the  Moosalamoo Recreation Area and the ski areas of central Vermont.

There is also plenty to do right in the neighborhood. Middlebury is home to the Sheldon Museum, the oldest community museum in the country. Nearby is the Robert Frost Homestead, the Middlebury College Museum of Art, the famed Bread Loaf Writers' School and ski areas of Middlebury College Snow Bowl and Rikert Cross Country Center just up the mountain.

Vermont has plenty to see and do in every season, winter is no different. We encourage all our visitors to enjoy what nature has given us by getting outside and appreciate Vermont’s winter beauty. Just a short drive from the inn, Middlebury College’s Snow Bowl or Rikert Nordic Center are located just off Route 125. The Snow Bowl offers 17 trails of challenging terrain and deep snow. Never skied downhill before? No problem, the Snow Bowl also offers a carpet lift located on a gentle slope for newcomers to learn and gain confidence on at no charge. Looking for something unhurried or slower paced? Try the Middlebury College Rikert Nordic Center where one can cross country ski, snowshoe, or ride a snow bike, commonly referred to as a “fat bike.” Set on Middlebury College’s Breadloaf Campus, the trails meander through the fields surrounding the campus buildings, through quiet serene forests, by and over babbling brooks and even past Robert Frost’s summer cabin.

Looking to stay inside cozy and warm? Try the Middlebury Tasting Trail featuring five world class producers all with in a five mile drive. Lincoln Peak Vineyard starts your journey, producing ten different wonderful wines. Woodchuck Hard Cider offers a wide variety of traditional and flavored hard ciders. Appalachian Gap Distillery is an artisanal distillery of smooth, unique and rich spirits. Next up is Otter Creek Brewery offering beers brewed under the Otter Creek, Shed, and Wolaver’s Organic ale labels. The trail winds down with Drop-In Brewery, a keg-only brewery offering six beers on tap and the ability to buy three different size growlers of your favorite brew.

When you are done with your busy day, we invite you back to sit by the fire, sip a glass of wine from Tom’s extensive wine list, tryout one or all of the beers from the local breweries we have on tap, or enjoy a memorable dinner at Jessica’s. Chef Rob has crafted a menu of local and regional favorites that is sure to suit everyone’s palate. Call today and book a room so you can relish in Vermont’s winter beauty with us!
